The popcorn truck that sold popcorn by Wisner Park for many, many years. You older Displaced Elmirans will remember the wonderful, buttery popcorn that you could buy from the truck. So buttery, in fact, that if you didn't eat the popcorn fast, the paper bag would soak right through. (Courtesy of Tom Drum)
The truck now has a permanent viewing house in Wisner Park. These pictures were taken this summer at a festival near The Christmas House on Maple Avenue. Brand Park can be seen in the background. (Courtesy of Tom Drum)
As the plaque on the side of the truck says, Frank Romeo gave up the business in 1971. No one knew what ever happened to the truck, until it was finally found in Bearsville, NY in 1988. It was a complete wreck. The truck was brought back to Elmira, and a Preservation Society was started. Due to the generous donators, in money, materials and labor, the popcorn truck was fully restored by the mid '90s. And guess what? You can buy that delicious (though not as good as Frank's), buttery popcorn from it once again! (Courtesy of Tom Drum)
Ray Newell - 1976 Bi-Centenial parade - 6/19/1976. Ray worked, I believe, for the parks dept. And I think Ray was of Indian decent. He wanted to do something to show his respect for our country, So he chose to sit high on the flag pole in our then Post Office for the whole parade to go by. (Courtesy of Tony Volino)

Speaking of memorable vehicles, how many of you used to buy ice cream from Mr. Softee? Remember the familiar, "Ding, Ding" of the truck in the evening? Well, the "old bird" is still flying. Same truck, same soft ice cream. (Courtesy of Tom Drum)
